How to make a podcast or audio project from start to finish

Overview

While most of your project will probably consist of original audio, you may want to use some preexisting audio as well, like music and archival audio. Here are some tips for finding audio you can use. 

If possible, download audio as an .mp3 or .wav file. These are the easiest to import into your audio editor later -  but if you can't, don't worry. You can convert files once you have downloaded them, instructions are in the Editing section.  

Music

There are a few considerations for using music in your podcast. If you are using popular music you need to be aware of copyright. While you might be able to use small selections of music under fair use there is no hard and fast rule for this. So it is much safer to use royalty free or public domain music/audio. It may also be a good idea to incorporate some archival audio and oral histories in your projects. Finding these will vary based on your topic but here are a few starting locations:

Recording audio on your computer

Sometimes you aren’t able to download an audio file onto your computer. If that is the case you can use Audacity to record audio playing on your computer. This can be a good workaround to get a file you can use. You can also use this to get an audio file from a video.
