Podcasting

How to make a podcast or audio project from start to finish

Why write a script?

Even “conversational” podcasts can have scripts, and no matter if you think you know what you want to say by heart - having a script will make sure you don’t forget any of your main points. And when you are recording, having a script will let you do multiple takes that can be edited together. Also it gives you another opportunity to get feedback from your professor and ensure your project meets the requirements for the assignment.

If you are including interviews in your podcast, don't worry about including those in the script.

Guidelines

Here are some considerations to think about when scripting your podcast.

Podcasts are typically 150-160 words per minute, of course this will vary based on your speaking speed. But at that rate a 15 minute podcast would be about 2,250-2,400 words, which is about the equivalent of a 9-10 page double spaced essay.

If this were a 10 page essay, how many pages would you devote to each section? For example, 1 page each for intro and conclusions and either:

  • Two 4-page topics
  • Three 2.5-page topics
  • One 4-page topic and two 1-page topic
  • Or something else!
