Zotero Reference Management

Zotero is a tool that can help you keep track of your research and create bibliographies

Create a Bibliography

Creating a bibliography (your professor might refer to it as a reference list or a works cited list) is easy in Zotero. This is the complete list of all the sources you're using in a particular paper or project, and typically is put at the end of an essay.

  1. Select the collection or individual sources that you want to include in your bibliography.
  2. Right click and select create bibliography
  3. Under Citation Styles, select the appropriate style; under Output Mode, select Bibliography; and under Output Method, select Copy to Clipboard. Click OK.
  4. Open your project and paste the bibliography into the document
  5. Proofread the bibliography to make sure all the information is correct.

Select Your Citation Styles

Zotero has access to thousands of citation styles, but as a student you'll only have to worry about a few. To make sure the ones you'll use are the most easily accessible:

  1. Go to the edit menu, select preferences, and go to the cite tab
  2. Look through the Style Manager list to find the citation style your professor has asked you to use
    • Hint: Most college classes will use Modern Language Association (MLA) 9th edition, American Psychological Association (APA) 8th edition, or Chicago (notes) 17th edition
  3. You can remove styles that you don't need by clicking the style name and then the minus sign
  4. If a style you need is not in the Style Manager list, click get additional styles
  5. Search the name of the style you need. Don't be intimidated by the number of results you get! If you're unsure which variation or edition you should use, talk to your professor or a librarian.
  6. Click the appropriate citation style--it has now been added to your Style Manager.
