Using Interlibrary Loan

Learn more about how to use Interlibrary Loan (ILL) at the Sarah Lawrence College Library

What to Know Before Requesting

Before making an ILL request, you must first check the Sarah Lawrence Library catalog to see if we already own the item.  If we do, but the catalog indicates our copy is “Lost,” we will attempt to borrow a copy via ILL.  However, we do not do an ILL for anything accessible in the collection including items already checked out to another patron, items currently on reserve, or items in our Reference Collection.

ILL requests for physical, returnable items (print books, DVDs, etc.) can take anywhere between 1-4 weeks to arrive.  Journal articles/book chapters usually take between 1-7 business days.

Physical items will be held for you at the library’s Circulation Desk, and will be returned promptly should they not be picked up by the due date assigned by the lending library.  Articles, etc. will arrive via an email with either a PDF of the article attached, or a link and password to retrieve the document, which you are advised to retrieve, download and save immediately as the link will only be valid for 30 days (or 5 views, whichever should come first).

Request Items Using the Library Catalog

To request an item through ILL start by searching for it in the Library Catalog. Once you have found it you can click on the blue Request button.

The Interlibrary Loan form will automatically fill in the relevant information, including your name, email address and barcode. Click “Submit Request”.

Librarian Tip: Placing requests through the Library Catalog is typically the fastest and easiest way to place a request. If you can't find an item in the catalog see our FAQ on finding items. You can also use your Library Account to place requests for books, articles, and more.

Request Items Using Your Interlibrary Loan Account (Manually)

How can I make ILL requests through my account? If for some reason you are not able to find a catalog record for an article or book that you would like to get through ILL, you can create your own request. Go to your Library Account from the Library homepage or via this link, log in with your MySLC ID and password (if you aren’t logged in already) and click the “Create Request” button.

Fill in the fields for your request (including selecting if it is a book, article, or "other"). It will automatically populate with your name, email, and barcode. Click the “Submit Request” button at the bottom of the page (not pictured here).
