Public Health and Advocacy: Interlibrary Loan

Use this Guide to find research tips and tricks in Health Advocacy.

What is Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a Library privilege that allows Sarah Lawrence to "check out" materials that we don't have from other libraries. If we don't have something you need at Sarah Lawrence you can request it through ILL and we will look to see if we can borrow it from another library.

Request an Item Now

What to Know Before Requesting

Before Requesting an Item: You must first check the Sarah Lawrence Library Catalog to see if we own the item.

Do not request articles available in journals that we own or are available through our full-text databases. If you need assistance searching the library catalog or databases, please ask us!

How Long Will it Take?: ILL Requests for articles usually take between 1-2 business days.

How Do I Access My Interlibrary Loan Requests? You will receive an email with a link and password to access the article. You can either download the article and save it or use the link to access it again. Keep in mind that the link to the article will be available for only 30 days or 5 views.

Request Items Using the Library Catalog

Librarian Tip: You must be logged-in in order to see the blue Interlibrary Loan Request button.

To request an item through ILL start by searching for it in the Library Catalog. Once you have found it you can click on the blue Request button.

Librarian Tip: Placing requests through the Library Catalog is typically the fastest and easiest way to place a request. If you can't find an item in the catalog click here and see the section called "Can't find the article that you need to request?" You can also use Clio to place requests.

Request Items Using Your Interlibrary Loan Account (Manually)

How can I make ILL requests through my account? If for some reason you are not able to find a catalog record for an article or book that you would like to get through ILL, you can create your own request. Go to your Interlibrary Loan Library Account from the Library homepage or via this link , log in with your myslc id and password (if you aren’t logged in already) and click the “Create Request” button.

Fill in the fields for your request (including selecting if it is a book, article, or "other"). It will automatically populate with you name, email, and barcode. Click the “Submit Request” button at the bottom of the page.

*Please note, requesting items through this method may take longer to process because requests are manually handled by the ILL staff.

Check Your ILL Status & History

How do I check the status of my ILL request?

When you sign into your Interlibrary Loan Account, you can easily check the status of your pending ILL requests from the homepage after you have logged in. Use the dropdown menu just below your name on the upper right hand side of the screen. Click “My ILL Requests”.

Your requests will be listed along with their current status:

You may see that the status is initially set to “unknown”. It may take a little time to be updated to submitted. You will receive an email notification when your requested item is available.
