Donating Books to Incarcerated People

Books and library services can be critical forms of self-care and survival for those incarcerated in correctional facilities. There are many organizations that provide donated books to people in jails and prisons around the country. When considering these types of donations, it is particularly important to meet the specific needs of the organization in question. Prison policies vary by location and can play a major role in determining which books can be sent to people inside. If you have questions, be sure to reach out before donating, 

 

What to donate What not to donate
  • Paperbacks. Most prisons do not allow hardcover books
  • Recently published books in good condition
  • Black history, especially 20th century
  • Indigenous American history
  • Latinx history
  • How-to (drawing, origami, chess, etc.)
  • Memoirs and fiction by people of color
  • Dictionaries, thesaurusi, GED studies, atlases
  • Language studies
  • Sudoko/puzzles
  • Guides to starting a business
  • Yoga and pilates guides
  • Mass-market mysteries, thrillers, sci-fi
  • Books with spiral bindings
  • Textbooks more than 5 years old
  • Religious paraphernalia
  • Magazines older then the current year
  • Books in bad condition
  • Books with written notes and/or highlighting
  • Anything else forbidden by prison or jail policies

Where to Donate

Accepts donations of only a limited scope of topics and only paperback books. NYPLCS also encourages donors to send newer books in great shape. This ensures they will be attractive on book carts, especially to new or hesitant readers.

Accepts recently published paperback books that are in good condition. Visit website and contact for guidance on what to donate.

Provides a list of prisons that accept books. Please send books directly to the prisons.

Check website and local chapter for current needs, but usually trade skills, puzzle books, dictionaries, instructional art, etc.

Seattle-based nonprofit organization that mails free books to incarcerated individuals across the United States. Check website for eligible books.

Seeking softcover English dictionaries, almanacs, books in Spanish for native speakers, LGBTQ materials, contemporary fiction, or funds to help with distribution costs.
